The Meaning Behind the Ink: The Story

Loss, grief and recovery

After losing my wife Tracey to cancer in 2015, my stepson and I decided to get memorial tattoos for her. We settled on a variation of a design from a tattoo that Tracey had on her leg.

We both had Megan do our tattoos on the recommendation of a mutual friend of ours.

This was the beginning of a long friendship between Megan and myself that has resulted in multiple tattoos, including further memorial tattoos for other lost loved ones, a full sleeve of Scottish-themed images (I’m originally from Scotland), and some superhero-themed tattoos. But everything goes back to that first tattoo—how it became part of the healing process, and how those many future tattoo sessions with Megan helped me focus on something other than grief and loss.

It all recently came full circle when my daughter was also tattooed by Megan. She was too young at the time to get tattooed, but now, ten years later, all three of us share this unique and beautiful reminder of Tracey.
