The Meaning Behind the Ink: The Story

Tulips for my Grandfather

Posted on April 26, 2025 by Cora Wynsma

Tulips have always held a special place in my heart. Besides their beauty, they remind me of my grandfather who passed away a few years ago. His side of the family has Dutch heritage, so I always associated tulips with him.

Tulip Time is a popular period in Holland, Michigan, because of the importance of tulips in Dutch culture. I had never been in Michigan during Tulip Time, but my grandfather’s funeral ended up happening in April, which is just about peak tulip season. Since then, tulips have always connected me to my grandpa in a way, and I knew I wanted to get a tattoo including tulips.

The teapot represents my grandma, who is still alive today. The teapot has traditional Hungarian artwork for my grandmother’s Hungarian heritage and represents the many tea parties I had with my grandma in my childhood.

Both of my grandparents have been such incredible people in my life, and I’m so grateful Madi made my vision come to life with this tattoo!
