The Meaning Behind the Ink: The Story

Where the Wild Things Were

My left sleeve is a decent representation of my personality expressed through art. Random, colorful, and “wtf is going on here?” However, the piece I am sharing and why it is meaningful to me is more so who the tattoo depicts. Which is also the artist.

Josiah Boyd was… He was Josiah Boyd! If you met him, you’d never forget him. Once in a lifetime individual. Concerning our relationship, the last thing he was to me was my tattoo artist. I was fortunate to forge a bond with him on a level that few got to. He was my roommate, we worked together at the same Chinese restaurant, we were bandmates. We lived, we struggled, we made art together. We were brothers.

During my sleeve, I was going to get a monster from Where The Wild Things Are, but for whatever reason, I had him tattoo himself as a monster. He passed away in a car accident not too long ago. It feels more recent because I think about him all the time. I think about all the milestones I would have had him be a part of.

Fortunately, I have my monster Siah close to my heart. He is with me all day, every day. Wherever I go, he goes.
